Unwanted mail is a horrific waste of paper. According to author Tracey Smith, “the waste paper thrown into landfill every year could fill 103,448 double decker buses, and if they were parked bumper to bumper they would stretch from London to Milan.” So our first step has to be to address the problem of junk mail. One quick way to do this is to write a notice saying “No flyers, circulars or leaflets required here – thanks” and leave it in view in a window by your front door or stuck on the front of your lockable mailbox. Another way to reduce unwanted mail is to contact the Direct Marking Association and the Mailing Preference Service, and requesting that your address be removed from their system.

Try to get out of the habit of picking up free catalogues, brochures and leaflets when you are out and about; do you really need those ten easy recipes from the Mushroom Bureau, for example? Make sure you don’t bring any more paper and newsprint into your home than you actually need, and, of course, recycle it when you have read it. You can also use scrunched up newspapers and flyers as packing materials around fragile objects you want to send in the post – this is useful for Ebay sellers. Or if you have a pet rabbit or guinea pig, shred your unwanted paper and use it for animal bedding.
